The Best Soup Joumou Recipe!

Sofrito Lovers,

The first time I tasted Soup Joumou I was hooked!  How could you go wrong with a thick, flavorful, and delicious broth full of meat, pasta, and veggies?  It's impossible!

Back in high school, I had a Haitian friend, Martinique, who used to bring lunch from home.  One fateful afternoon, she opened a large thermos of soup and an incredible aroma wafted its way to me.  I put down my god-awful hyper-processed poor excuse for a cheeseburger and asked her what she had for lunch.  She said it was called Soup Joumou and explained its historical significance and how it's a symbol of Haitian Independence from colonialism.  Then, she poured me a cup and let me savor this outstanding Caribbean delicacy.  It was love at first taste.

Soup Joumou is full of root vegetables (yam, malanga, potatoes, and cassava), carrots, cabbage, stewed beef, and pasta floating in a calabaza (West Indian Pumpkin) based broth.  I've wanted to learn how to prepare this soup for many years, and now thanks to YouTube I can.  Kuisine Kreyol is a remarkable resource for Haitian recipes and food culture.  The recipe for Soup Joumou (posted below) is easy to follow and yields a wonderful dinner.  Check it out and expand those horizons-you won't regret it.

Go taste for yourself! ¬°Buen Provecho!
